International Competition for a New Architectural Solution for the Future Nikola Tesla Museum Announced

The Nikola Tesla Museum will finally get the space it deserves, in the building of the former Milan Vapa’s Paper Mill, also known as the Jugošped building, in Vojvoda Mišić Boulevard in Belgrade Waterfront.

The first factory in Serbia built after the First World War in 1924 will remain the monument of culture under the protection of the Institute for Protection of Cultural Monuments of the City of Belgrade, but after the planned reconstruction, it will be adapted to the needs of a museum where the entire legacy of one of the greatest minds of all time will be exhibited, and not just a partial one, as was the case so far at the existing address in Krunska Street.

Wanting to preserve the memory of Nikola Tesla and to present his genius work to the whole world in an innovative and modern way, Belgrade Waterfront announced an international competition for a new architectural solution for the building where the museum will move.

The building of the first Serbian paper factory is located on a plot of 7,200 sqm and has more than 8,400 sqm on two floors. The participants in the competition should offer a solution that will preserve the historical value of one of the best-preserved and most significant buildings of industrial architecture in Serbia and create a space for a very rich museum exhibition, dedicated to one of the greatest inventors of the modern era.

Belgrade Waterfront invites all interested entities from Serbia and abroad to apply for the competition from October 4 to December 17, 2024, and participate in an undertaking that should symbolically combine the legacy of Serbian genius with the architecture of old Belgrade, but also with a modern look of the capital, embodied in Belgrade Waterfront.

The competition documentation can be downloaded HERE, and the expert jury, composed of Company’s representatives and eminent architectural experts, will announce the winner no later than December 31.

More details about the competition task, the way of participation and the proposals are available at https://www.muzejnikoletesle-konkurs.rs/en/.

By reviving one more construction pearl of great cultural and historical importance for Serbia, Belgrade Waterfront continues to work dedicatedly on the restoration of the rich architectural heritage of the Serbian capital and cherishes the memory of the greats who have entrused us with it. After the Belgrade Cooperative, The Bristol Hotel and Sava Square, it is time for this century-old building/museum to shine with its old glory.
